How did you get started
in lettering?
I started lettering through my interest in illustration. I studied graphic design at Tyler School of Art and a lot of my projects had a handmade look I used a lot of textures and illustrations. However, once I started adding fonts, my design would fall apart. I recall one project where, my professor had me go back to my sketches to see what and when it went wrong. Turns out, the way I lettered the headlines or the logo, it was working with the illustrations much better. Finally, my projects were coming together in a way that felt like my style. After graduating, I started making personal projects that I started posting. I opened up an Etsy shop in 2008 and was selling posters, Mini Goals Chalkboards, and small paintings. All the work included lettering and my own motivational phrases. My biggest sellers were my “Feels Good to Get Some Stuff Done” poster and my Mini-Goals Chalkboards. I was able to start making connections through my Etsy shop. Blogs posted my work, customers turned into clients and people who saw my work online hired me.
